Dubrovnik from Above: River, Bridge & Srđ

Two hours is enough to see Dubrovnik from angles most visitors miss. We start where a river comes straight out of the rock, cross the big bridge over the harbour and finish on top of Srđ, the hill behind the Old Town.

It is a good first trip if you have just arrived and want to understand how the city fits together, and an easy one with children or older parents.

The plan for the day

  1. Ombla spring

The Ombla river appears from under the karst at the foot of the hill and runs only a few kilometres to the sea. The water is cold and very clear, even in August.

  2. Franjo Tuđman Bridge

A short stop at the bridge for the view over Gruž harbour and the islands beyond it.

  3. Bosanka

The road climbs through the village of Bosanka, on the plateau above the city.

  4. Srđ

From the top the whole Old Town, the walls and the island of Lokrum are below you. The Napoleonic fort on the summit houses a small museum about the 1991 siege of Dubrovnik.

Good to know

The best light on Srđ is in the late afternoon. Bring something warm outside summer, as it can be windy at the top.
