Konavle Stone, Mills & Borderland Stories
Konavle is the green valley at the southern tip of Croatia, between the sea and the mountains on the border. Most people only see it from the airport road, but the villages behind it have kept a quieter, rural rhythm.
This trip follows the valley from Cavtat to the fortress of Sokol Grad, with time for lunch at one of the old mills.

Konavle
The plan for the day
Čilipi
The main village of Konavle. On summer Sundays there is a folklore programme in front of the church, in the traditional costume of the region.
Ljuta
A small river that comes out of the hillside and once turned dozens of mills. Several of them are now restaurants, with tables right by the water.
Sokol Grad
A medieval fortress built on a rock above the valley, guarding the old border. Inside there is a small exhibition and the view across Konavle from the walls.
Good to know
Sokol Grad has steps and uneven ground. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, and entrance tickets are paid on the spot.
